Blenheim – View to the Bridge 6
One of a series of small sketch paintings that record scenes from key locations in the parkland of Blenheim Palace. Jon is one of six contemporary artists chosen to be part of an exhibition celebrating 300 years of Capability Brown’s landscape. The exhibition concentrates on the artistic interpretation of the landscape and the juxtaposition of these contemporary views with those of Turner, Piper, Radclyffe and Cozens and other famous artists. Three of his paintings are being shown. This is one of them.

Portraying the Essence
This theme has emerged as some of the paintings and sketches themselves have been deconstructed and abstracted. This provides the opportunity to play with colour and shape, and to create paintings of detail and depth. Scenes are painted over and over. Each picture dissects the landscape to expose its essence and abstracts and ‘decorates’ the result of this analysis. This has been the case when Jon has painted a favourite area in Scotland where the landscape is both sensual and evocative. The theme of Details is built up from the landscape around the River Fleet valley in Scotland.

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
