Bougainville – Sorrowful City #2 – Per me si va nella cita dolente

Cezanne once said that painting from nature is not copying the object; it is realizing one’s sensations. The complex process of drawing inspiration from these two sources, nature and emotion, has been my goal. This work is part of a series that was stimulated by visits to several ancient cities that reflected on the juxtaposition of ancient buildings, some several hundred years old, coping with latest technologies. This Bougainville series (a reference to Bidonvilles and Bougainvillea) has lighter tones that belie the solidity of the ancient spaces and illustrates the intrusion of the high-voltage colour of natural interventions.

The Artist

Jon Rowland

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
