Jon Rowland – This is one of a series of abstract multi-media paintings that have emerged from my walks through neighbouring woods and peering out to open fields. The painting is also my response to the sense of wind. The colour palette reflects the usage of pastels, and the bright colours and abstract nature make this a statement piece. This painting and others in this series are painted on paper and point to a new direction for me.

Places and Spaces
A number of locations have influenced ideas on abstraction. Many pictures are painted ‘en plein air’, whether in Cuba, Provence, Devon, or the Scottish Coast - where the environment continually changes. In some cases he explores space, light, and colour. Hot sands in high summer, winter rains at high tide, peaty streams as the snow melts are part of this theme. Painting at the edge of water requires the ability to capture the essence of the moment before it’s lost. He draws on influences from both west coast America and the new English landscape scene.

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
