This painting started off as a view of the very dry area near Roussillon, known for its yellow ochre, but gradually morphed into a statement about peace and tranquillity led that led to a series of paintings about the attributes we value. I find grounding myself initially is useful but then the painting takes on its own life, like characters in a book, and guides the painting and its process. This work is part of a series of paintings.

Places and Spaces
A number of locations have influenced ideas on abstraction. Many pictures are painted ‘en plein air’, whether in Cuba, Provence, Devon, or the Scottish Coast - where the environment continually changes. In some cases he explores space, light, and colour. Hot sands in high summer, winter rains at high tide, peaty streams as the snow melts are part of this theme. Painting at the edge of water requires the ability to capture the essence of the moment before it’s lost. He draws on influences from both west coast America and the new English landscape scene.

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
