This painting is part of the ‘Sorrowful City’ series. This work is part of a series that was stimulated by visits to several ancient cities that reflected on the juxtaposition of ancient buildings, some several hundred years old and the fact that they provided shelter today. The painting is bereft of people, this being a hot place, and presents a calm exterior with a voluble interior. Of course when the children come from school the passage comes alive.

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
