Through The Spring Window – 2
Through the Spring Window’ – 2 is one of a series of paintings by Jon Rowland that build on the ‘Tree of Love series’ but change the colour palette. The bright colours and abstract nature make this a statement piece. This palette echoes the spring colours of woodland areas, and the emotional response to the emergence from Corona. One comment has been that “…there are elements that reflect both Bonnard and Rothko”. Another is “…so vibrant and exciting, a joy to see….colour and energy bursting from every corner. Inspirational!” This painting and others in this series are painted on paper and point to a new direction for me.

Colouration
Colour is central to Jon’s paintings, whether exploring the juxtaposition of hue or depth of colour. This changes depending on location. In Scotland, the day-to-day, and hour-by-hour changes in weather provided the opportunity to enhance an otherwise muted palette.
The new exhibitions will continue to explore the importance of 'place' in my 'grounded' abstracts. It is a celebration of particular spaces that mean a lot to me, whether during the Covid period, when we were not able to move out of our houses, or in particular regions, which I visited after the lockdowns were abandoned.
During the pandemic, the emotional response to ‘lockdown’ and the internal domestic environment produced further opportunities for abstraction.

Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
