Kirkudbright is noted for it being the “artists’ town” and is a traditional county town, with a history of artists both visiting and living there. It has been known as the ‘Pont Aven’ of the North. It has had a long association with the Glasgow art movement. Artists, including the Glasgow Boys, and the famed Scottish colourists, based themselves in the area over a 30-year period from 1880 to 1910, establishing the Kirkudbright Artists Colony. Charles Oppenheimer moved to Kirkcudbright in 1908. He is given credit along with artist Dorothy Nesbitt for protecting the Harbour Cottage (art) Gallery from demolition in 1956.
This new exhibition will take place on 1 – 16 June 2025.
I explore the idea of ‘place’ in my abstracted works from 2022 – 2025. Most works I do there are ‘en plein air.’ I celebrate particular spaces that mean a lot to me and which I have visited over many years. From the nearby shore I can see the changing forms of the landscape and weather. Sometimes the hills cannot be seen because of the ‘dreich’. Sometimes the sun adds to the sensuality of the place.
I’m never sure what I will end up painting, but I know it will be colourful!
Jon draws on locations that have played a part in his ‘artistic journey’, exploring space, light and colour, and it is this juxtaposition. He manipulates emerging abstraction to express the essence of a particular ‘place’.
